May 2012 Events

  • Programs are open to the general public, groups, & Reserve supporters.

  • All events specify a minimum age for participation.
    • Eight (8) is the minimum age for most Reserve events.
    • Some events require participants to be ages 12 & up.
    • FAMILY events welcome children aged 6 & up.
    • Refer to specific event listing for details.

  • Pre-registration required for all programs.
    • Contact us to obtain registration instructions or arrange a special group outing.
    • Your registration enables us to contact you about program changes or cancellations.

  • Release Waiver (2-sided form)
    • Every adult event attendee must sign a release waiver.
    • One waiver per household.
    • Form contains space for signatures of 2 adults and names of 3 minors living at the same address.
    • Processing waivers onsite reduces time available for events; if possible, please fill out waiver ahead of time.

  • Please arrive promptly!
    • The Reserve is surrounded by private land, and many events take place on land protected by a locked gate.

  • Come Prepared!
    • No sandals or flip-flops.
    • Wear closed-toe shoes—sneakers, light hiking boots, or walking shoes.
    • For protection against scratchy plants & small biting critters such as ticks, wear long-pants; light colors are best.
    • For daytime walks and hikes, wear hat and sunscreen and carry something to drink.
    • For evening events, dress warmly and bring a flashlight.
    • We reserve the right to refuse admittance to patrons who are not properly equipped.

  • Program dates & times subject to change.
    • Weather, insufficient advance registration, or circumstances beyond our control may result in program change or cancellation.

Cancelled---Horno Basin Bird Walk (Ladera)
Join guest leaders Robert Scrimger and Gary Meredith for a bird walk at Horno Basin in Ladera Ranch. Expect to see migratory birds, including aquatic species. Birds get up early, so we will do likewise! (BRING: Binoculars & birding guides if you have them. INTERPRETATION: High. FITNESS LEVEL: Easy.)

CPF Nature Talk: Spiders (Caspers Wilderness Park)
A nature-themed lecture is usually held in association with the monthly meeting of Caspers Park Foundation (CPF) volunteers. his month, Leonard Vincent, a spider enthusiast associated with Fullerton College, will give a presentation on local species of spiders. Lecture start time is approximate; lecture follows the business portion of the meeting, which starts at 9:30a.

Ghostwalker Cougar in the Santa Ana Mountains
Join Senior Park Ranger Donna Krucki for her informative presentation about the elusive native cougar. Donna will discuss the natural history of the cougar and share information from both past and current lion studies, highlighting the need for connected open space habitats – both for our benefit and for the benefit of local native wildlife. Part of The Reserve's "Spring Series" of in-depth indoor wildlife presentations.

Trail Clearing & Weeding
Volunteer to spend a few hours in beautiful surroundings helping make Reserve trails accessible to our visitors. You'll join a dedicated crew in protecting the food plants of our native wildlife by eliminating weeds, those pesky botanical invaders. Volunteer efforts make an impact! Drinks and snacks provided. (BRING: Work gloves if you have them. FITNESS LEVEL: Moderate.)

Track and Scat Family Walk
Come join us on a beautiful May morning while we walk the trails and learn all about animal tracks and scat. This walk is geared toward children but everyone is welcomed. You will discover the clues that animals leave behind and how to identify them. Let's all learn some ways to be an animal detective! (INTERPRETATION LEVEL: High; FITNESS LEVEL: Easy.)

Astronomy Night
For years, the stars have been considered heaven's guideposts. Observers looked to the night sky to predict everything from a change of weather to a change of leaders. Enjoy an evening outdoors, as you gaze into the heavens, learn the constellations, and peer through the telescopes of our volunteer astronomers. (BRING: Warm clothing, flashlight, binoculars, optional beach chair. INTERPRETATION LEVEL: Moderate; FITNESS LEVEL: Easy.)
